Caring - this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This is the first inspection for this service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The service treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy.

 

Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.People told us they were treated with dignity in their day-to-day care and support. One person said, “They are always very kind and very nice to me.” Another person told us, “Staff are super.” Relatives spoke positively about staff. One relative told us, “[Family member] is respected and looked after well.” Another relative said, “The staff are very kind, caring, respectful and provide dignified care.”

 

We observed staff were friendly towards people and each other. There was a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere within the service and people appeared to be comfortable with staff.

 

Health and social care professionals were complimentary about the service. A health and social care professional told us,“The staff have always been very helpful towards me, and very caring to the residents.”

Treating people as individuals

The service treated people as individuals. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.A relative said, “Staff try to encourage [family member]. Sometimes [family member] is happy in the lounge and other times prefers the quiet in the bedroom. Staff do their best to accommodate [family member’s] wishes.”

 

Staff knew people well and were aware of their personal preferences and cultural needs.

Independence, choice and control

People were supported to maintain relationships and networks that were important to them.

 

We observed a range of appropriate equipment available to support and maximise people’s independence and outcomes from care and treatment. Activities were planned ahead of time and the timetable was readily available. People were consulted on what activities they would like to partake in. Relatives were complimentary about the service. One relative said, “I have an immense trust in the staff and management.” Another relative told us, “[Family member] is well cared for with all the equipment to keep [family member] safe.”

 

People who wanted to attend religious services were supported to do so.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff were able to recognise when people needed help or support and contacted health and social care professionals appropriately. We observed meaningful interactions between staff and people.

People were supported by staff who knew them well and understood their needs.One relative told us, “Staff are very proactive and recently a dentist was organised to come visit.” Another relative said, “When [family member] was unwell they called a GP.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Staff told us they enjoyed working at the service and thought the registered manager was approachable. A staff member said, “Everyone is so friendly;, the registered manager and staff are very supportive.”

 

Wellbeing was discussed as part of the supervision programme and staff had regular team meetings.

 

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff.A relative told us, “Staff’s training takes place often and [family member] is well looked after.”
