All Inspections

09/08/2023

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced comprehensive inspection on 9 August 2023 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions.

We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations.

The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector who was supported by a specialist dental advisor.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following 5 questions:

  • Is it safe?
  • Is it effective?
  • Is it caring?
  • Is it responsive to people’s needs?
  • Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available, except for some sizes of clear face masks.
  • The practice had systems to manage risks for patients, staff, equipment and the premises.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation. Some recruitment documents had not been copied to main recruitment files.
  • Clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect. Staff took care to protect patients’ privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system worked efficiently to respond to patients’ needs.
  • The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved, supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • Complaints were dealt with positively and efficiently.
  • The practice had information governance arrangements.

Background

Ainsdale Dental Practice is in Ainsdale, Merseyside and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is step free access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces are available outside the practice. The practice has made reasonable adjustments to support patients with access requirements.

The dental team includes 3 dentists, 6 dental nurses, 3 of whom are trainees, 1 dental therapist, 1 practice manager and 2 receptionists. The practice has 4 treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with 2 dentists, 2 dental nurses, 1 receptionist and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies, procedures and other records to assess how the service is managed.

The practice is open: Monday and Wednesday from 8.30am to 5.30pm; on Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30am to 7.30pm, and on Friday from 8.30am to 5pm.

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Improve the practice’s arrangements for ensuring good governance and leadership are sustained in the longer term. In particular, for the oversight of clinical audit, staff training, maintenance of recruitment records, management of NHS prescription sheets and routine checks on medical emergency medicines and equipment.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited Ainsdale Dental Practice to review our findings of non-compliance in one outcome at our inspection in December 2013.

At this inspection we spoke with the Clinical Coordinator about the changes that had been made since the last inspection in December 2013.

We looked at staff records and saw evidence appraisals had taken place. We spoke with two staff who told us about their appraisals.

3 December 2013

During a routine inspection

During the inspection we spoke with three patients who were attending the dental practice to gain their views about the service they received. Patients told us the dentists always explained the treatment. They told us, "The surgery is very good", "Always very clean", "You always go in for your appointment on time" and "There's no problem getting an appointment when you need one."

Patients said the staff made sure they received sufficient information about their treatment options, so they were able to make informed decisions about what treatments were best for them. A patient told us they knew what treatment they were having and everything had been explained to them. Another patient told us the staff were reassuring and did their best to relieve any anxiety they had about their treatment.

We found the dental practice to be clean and tidy. Staff were working in accordance with infection control policies and procedures to prevent, detect and control the spread of infection.

Staff had access to training. This meant they had the skills, knowledge and expertise to provide care and treatment to patients safely. Staff interviewed told us they had access to good training for their 'continuous professional development' (CPD) they had to complete to keep their (dental nurse) registration current. They told us everyone worked well as a team and they could go to the dentists with any issues they had. However they did not receive regular supervision or appraisals.

Systems were in place to assess the monitor the quality of the service provided at the dental practice to ensure patients received safe, effective treatment.
