People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 24 April 2013, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. We talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for by suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

Reasons for our judgement

There were effective recruitment and selection processes in place.

The practice had recruitment policies and procedures that were followed when appointing staff. The practice consisted of the principal dentist, a dental nurse and a receptionist. We saw that all three members of staff were appropriately qualified and had appropriate professional registrations that were regularly renewed. This meant that clinical staff working in the practice were qualified and registered to work with people using the service.

We saw staff recruitment records were kept for each member of staff. Staff records included evidence of regular training and an annual appraisal. The provider might wish to note that not all of the staff files contained copies of employment references.
