During an assessment under our new approach
Date of assessment: 24 March – 21 April 2026. We carried out this inspection due to the service not yet receiving a rating since registering with CQC.
Companions in Care is a domiciliary care service which provides personal care to people living in their own homes. At the time of this inspection the service was supporting 3 people with personal care.
Risk assessments were in place, although required more detail to ensure risks presented to people were effectively managed. Although staff supervisions took place, these were infrequent and annual appraisals were not being held. The provider gave us assurances these would be implemented.
People and their relatives told us they felt the service was safe. There were enough staff available to care for people and correct recruitment processes were in place. Staff understood about safeguarding and how to report concerns.
Assessments of people’s needs were carried out when they first began using the service. Mental capacity assessments were also completed to determine people’s decision-making capabilities. People were supported to access health services as needed.
We received positive feedback about the care provided. Staff were described as kind and caring towards people. Staff told us they enjoyed their roles and their well-being was supported.
People received person-centred care. Each person had their own care plan in place providing an overview of the care they required, although some of these required more detail. A complaints process was in place and information was available in different formats for people if they needed it.
Recruitment of a registered manager was in progress at the time of the inspection, with the previous manager leaving their role earlier in 2026. The nominated individual was currently overseeing the day to day running of the service. We received positive feedback about the leadership of the service. Staff liked working for the service and said there was a positive culture and freedom to speak up.
