Kindness, compassion and dignity

Staff contacted patients at agreed intervals following their attendance at the SARC. During follow up calls staff requested patient feedback which was recorded and used to improve the service. Feedback we saw was very positive for the staff and patients had been satisfied with the service they received. Feedback was displayed in a ‘you said, we did’ format in communal areas of the SARC. One example was a suggestion for gluten free food snacks to be provided which the provider had actioned, and these were now available to patients.

Patients were welcomed by a crisis worker on arrival who remained with them for support throughout their time at the SARC. They took time to explain what would happen and answered any questions the patient had. The environment was warm and welcoming, and patients could access a kitchen for hot or cold drinks and snacks.

The SARC was situated in a secluded area alongside a golf course on the outskirts of town which meant that patients could access the building discreetly. The SARC had two self-contained pods including preexamination and examination rooms and bathroom facilities which meant patients did not have to encounter anyone else in the building such as police colleagues or staff. Patients could shower and were offered a change of clothing and a care bag containing toiletries to use and take away.

Patient records were stored securely in locked filing cabinets within a secure staff area. The provider had processes in place to manage intimate images securely and confidentially. Forensic samples were stored in line with FFLM guidance and were stored for 2 years for patients who self-referred to the SARC in case patients decided they wanted to take action against a perpetrator at a later date.

Patients received ongoing support following their attendance at the SARC. Staff contacted patients using agreed methods at times to suit them to monitor their welfare and ensure they had all the support they required. Staff supported patients in making further referrals or chasing up any which were outstanding to ensure patients’ needs were met.
