4 July 2017

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced inspection on 4 July 2017 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a CQC inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

We told the NHS England area team that we were inspecting the practice. They did not provide any information.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services effective?

We found that this practice was providing effective care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services caring?

We found that this practice was providing caring services in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services responsive?

We found that this practice was providing responsive care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services well-led?

5 March 2013

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this inspection to follow up on compliance actions made at the last inspection of the service in June 2012.

We spoke with one person who was using the services of Boscombe Gardens during our inspection visit on 05 March 2013. This was in order to hear about their experiences. We also observed one person while they were in a treatment room with one of the two dentists working at the practice on the day of our inspection.

People told us they were treated politely and confidentially and that staff were discreet and ensured that information about them was treated sensitively in the reception area. People said when they were having checks ups and treatment that their dentists explained what they were doing and why. They told us they were given advice about dental care and hygiene. They also said that when treatment was required they were given a plan that set out what treatment was required and its cost.

We found that people were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate practice and guidance had been followed.

The provider had an effective complaints system in place.

The provider had effective systems to check and monitor the quality of their service. There were also systems to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people using the service and others.

20 June 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with twelve people who visited the dental practice for a variety of reasons. Some to see a dental hygienist, others to receive or had received treatment and others were for a routine and planned check up.

All people we spoke with were complimentary about the practice staff and described them as friendly, helpful and polite. Six of the people we spoke described the dentist who was working on the day of our inspection as 'nice', 'polite' and 'kind'. They also told us they had trouble understanding the dentist because of their accent. One person felt that they could have been told more about the procedures that were part of their check and said that 'communication could have been better'.

Everyone told us that if treatment was required it was explained to them and if options were available they were discussed. They also said that they were either asked to complete medical questionnaires or asked about their medical histories when they visited.

People said that treatment in an emergency could be arranged the same day. They also told us that treatment that was not urgent was arranged quickly and for a time that suited them.

We were able to observe four people as they received treatment or check ups from the dentist or hygienist who was working in the practice on the day of our inspection.
