During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced inspection on 10 May 2018 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a CQC inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services effective?

We found that this practice was providing effective care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services caring?

We found that this practice was providing caring services in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services responsive?

We found that this practice was providing responsive care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services well-led?

We found that this practice was providing well-led care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Background

Slade Dental Practice & Implant Centre is in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and provides NHS and private treatment to patients of all ages.

There is level access for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces, including for blue badge holders, are available near the practice.

The dental team includes five dentists (one of which is the principal dentist), five dental nurses, six dental nurses/receptionists, a hygienist, a dental therapist, a practice supervisor, a practice manager and an accounts manager. The practice has four treatment rooms.

The practice is owned by an individual who is the principal dentist there. They have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations about how the practice is run.

On the day of inspection we received feedback from 49 patients.

During the inspection we spoke with the principal dentist, two dental nurses/receptionists and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday- 9am- 8.30pm

Tuesday- 9am- 5.30pm

Wednesday- 9am- 8.30pm

Thursday- 9am- 4-30pm

Friday- 8am- 4.30pm

Saturday- 9am -12.30pm

Our key findings were:

  • The practice appeared clean and well maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk.
  • The practice staff had suitable safeguarding processes and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding adults and children.
  • The practice had thorough staff recruitment procedures.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Staff treated patients with dignity and respect and took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • The practice was providing preventive care and supporting patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system met patients’ needs.
  • The practice had effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked well as a team.
  • The practice asked staff and patients for feedback about the services they provided.
  • The practice dealt with complaints positively and efficiently.
  • The practice had suitable information governance arrangements.

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

Review the fire safety risk assessment and ensure that any actions required are complete and ongoing fire safety management is effective.

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We carried out this review to follow up issues that had been raised at our inspection on 30 April 2012. This included specific areas of the decontamination process such as personal protective equipment, instrument inspection and handwashing as well as whether the provider was monitoring fridge temperatures in which dental products were stored. We also checked to see if the provider had made improvements to it's recruitment procedures to ensure staff who worked unsupervised with people were appropriately checked.

The provider submitted evidence we requested on 05 December 2012 and after reviewing this evidence we found the provider had made the appropriate changes. We found dental nurses had been checked and found to be compliant in the requirements of the decontamination process. This included how instruments were checked, equipment used and effective hand washing. The provider showed how it had monitored fridge temperatures in which dental products were stored.

The provider demonstrated that dental staff who might work alone with patients had been CRB checked, and it had carried out a risk assessment, which concluded that dental nurses did not need a CRB check as they did not work alone with patients.

During a routine inspection

People who used the service told us during our visit on 30 April 2012 that their privacy and dignity was maintained during consultations and treatment. People told us treatments provided were fully explained by staff and they were given treatment options to choose from.

People told us they felt staff were polite and professional. One person told us; 'Staff are great, I love them'. Another said; 'Staff are polite and approachable'.

One person told us their family member who has a learning disability was happy to receive treatment at the surgery and staff were very good in providing care to this person.
