Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 14 October 2025

Date of Assessment: 28 October to 19 November 2025. The service is a nursing home providing support to older adults who may be living with dementia or a physical disability. Esmere Gardens provides care for up to a maximum of 60 people. At the time of the assessment, 19 people were receiving care. This was a planned inspection based on information received and was the first inspection for this service.

Overall, we rated this service as good.

The provider had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns. Staff were confident they would be heard, and any concerns would be investigated appropriately to keep people safe.

There were sufficient staff deployed to meet people's needs. Staff were recruited safely and had effective training, support and supervision. Medicines were mostly administered safely however, some areas of improvement were noted around administering times.

People’s needs were assessed and regularly reviewed. People and those important to them were involved in decisions about their care. Staff worked with health and social care professionals to enable people to access the care and treatment they required. The service had systems to ensure people’s needs were assessed and their care planned in accordance with best practice guidance and standards.

Staff ensured people’s care and support met individual needs and preferences. Staff told us they enjoyed working at the home and knew people well. People and their relatives praised the care they received and were happy and comfortable living in the home.

Professionals supporting the service were mostly very complimentary about the service.

External professionals who worked with the service mostly gave positive feedback about the care experiences of people and the communication from staff that enabled people to receive timely support where needed.

The home was well managed. The service had a range of quality monitoring processes There was a positive open culture fostered amongst the staff team and management which aligned with the jointly created values. Staff were able to raise concerns and told us the registered manager was approachable and supportive.

However, we did identify some areas of improvement during our assessment. We did see some areas where information provision needed improvement. This related to menu choices, life history information and end of life care planning.

Professionals identified palliative care as an area needing improvement to ensure people received appropriate support.

Improvement was needed to the management and recording of decisions within mental capacity assessments. The provider was responsive to this feedback during our inspection and started to address this.

People's experience of the service

People and relatives spoke positively about the care provided. People were happy to be involved in their care planning and felt able to share their views. People and relatives told us the management staff were approachable, and they felt able to share any concerns. People felt happy and safe living at Esmere Gardens and were supported by staff that were kind and caring.

People told us they had choice and control over the support they received and were listened to by staff and leaders. Staff treated people as individuals and respected their preferences. People’s privacy and dignity was maintained.

People told us that staff had the right skills to meet their needs and had confidence in their practice. One person told us how blessed they felt to be living at Esmere Gardens.

The environment was clean, spacious and well maintained. People told us the space met their needs for privacy and socialising, and we saw people comfortably navigating the home throughout our visit.

People and relatives told us visiting was encouraged without any restrictions and we saw people enjoying visits from family and friends throughout our time at the service. People had opportunities to engage and attend a variety of activities and events and gave positive feedback about the activity provision in the service.
