During an inspection looking at part of the service

People we spoke with were positive about the care and support they received at Sturts Farm One person told us, "I am always busy and I think that staff here are great."

We found that staff were recruited using appropriate procedures and that they received relevant training, supervision and support. We found that staff were aware of how to protect people from abuse or neglect and that relevant policies were in place to support this.

We saw that people received care and support that met their individual needs and that care planning systems described how they preferred to be supported by staff. We also saw that staff were knowledgable about people's specific needs and that risks were well managed. Plans were made to manage foreseeable emergencies that could affect people's care and support.

We saw that their consent was obtained for important decisions related to people's care and support. We also saw that if people could not consent, for example due to their learning disability, records were made to evidence that decisions made on their behalf were in people's best interests. We saw that appropriate systems were in place to assess the quality of the service and to ensure that any risks to people's safety and welfare were identified.

During a routine inspection

We found that not everyone living at Sturts Farm was able to communicate their experiences of living there. We therefore used observation, talking to people who know them, as well as some discussion with three people who were able to tell us about their experience.

We were told that staff helps people to be independent and support them in learning life skills such as shopping, preparing and cooking food.

People living at Sturts Farm had care and support plans in place which are informed by their essential life plan as well as risk, health and social assessments. Senior staff are selfless and dedicated to ensuring the well-being of people in their care.

People we spoke to told us that the food is good and that most of the vegetables they ate are grown on the farm.

We spoke to the family of four people and they were confident that their relative was living in a safe environment. Staff are aware of what constitutes abuse and how to respond to concerns but not all staff had relevant safeguarding training.

People are being supported and cared for by some staff that had not had proper and relevant recruitment checks prior to taking up their position.

Sturts Farm collects some information about quality and safety but does not always identify the actions to take to manage risks or improve the service.
