During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We carried out a review of Park Vale Dental Surgery following our initial inspection on 23rd January 2013, when we identified areas under Regulation 12 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008. The Commission had received an action plan from the provider which detailed how they intended to address the area of concern.

We have not revisited Park Vale Dental Surgery or spoke with people who used the service as part of this review because the practice were able to demonstrate they were meeting the standards without the need for a visit. We asked the provider to tell us, with supporting evidence, what changes they had implemented to comply with the outcome identified as non-compliant at the last inspection.

We were satisfied that people were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with six patients who all expressed satisfaction with the practice and the service it provided to them. They all said that they were treated with courtesy and respect by the reception and surgery staff. They did not experience difficulty making appointments and were not kept waiting unduly long in the waiting room.

Patients told us that when treatment had been given it was done in comfortable and painless way and that it was explained to them beforehand and they fully understood what was needed and why. One patient described the dentist as "sweet as pie". Another told us that "they were always treated well and could not wish for better". A third patient told us that over the years they had received a lot of routine dentistry as well as some emergency care and had always been looked after well.

We found that instruments were scrubbed and rinsed in the same sink which was not compatible with the current guidance. This meant that patient could not be assured that instruments had been cleaned appropriately.

Records were kept appropriately.
