27 February 2014

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We first inspected this practice on the 17th October 2013 and found the provider to be non-compliant with two outcomes, relating to infection control and supporting workers. We undertook this inspection on the 27th February 2014 to assess the improvements the practice had made regarding compliance to these outcomes.

We now saw that the management of infection control was of a good standard and that action that had been taken to improve the decontamination and sterilisation of dental instruments. This included the use of an appropriately equipped decontamination and sterilisation room and the appointment of a member of staff with appropriate experience to carry out the processes. An infection control audit had been undertaken.

We also saw that action had been taken in respect of the training and support of staff and that the provider was now compliant with this outcome. Staff had now had fire training and a fire drill had been undertaken. Appraisals were in the process of being undertaken with staff and they had received training in the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. A designated safeguarding lead for the practice had been appointed. A range of additional training courses had been attended by staff since our last inspection including resuscitation, restoration of broken teeth, record keeping and complaints.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who used the service and they told us they were happy with the care they received:

'I hate dentists but don't mind coming here, they help me through it and I've never had any problems'

'They are very good, very helpful and everything goes smoothly'

'I always have a good conversation and fully understand what the problem is and what my options are'.

We found that people were given good information about their care and were involved in decisions about their dental care. The provider had a quality assurance system in place.

However we found significant shortfalls in the provider's infection control and decontamination procedures, and their staff training and development.
