During a routine inspection

During our inspection we looked at the treatment records for seven people. These recorded information that the orthodontist had given to patients. In one case it was recorded that the patient had been shown their radiographs (x-rays) and models to enable them to understand their treatment needs. One person told us: 'At my first visit I was asked what I wanted, and why.' They went on to explain that the orthodontist wanted to find out what was important to them regarding the appearance of their teeth and how committed they would be to long term treatment.

Patient records described the adjustments that had been made to the patient's orthodontic appliance (brace) and reported on the progress of the treatment. In one case we saw that the orthodontist had explained what treatment would be needed in the future to achieve the desired result.

The practice monitored the results of the treatment they carried out. This was done by analysing a sample of patients to measure the improvement in their orthodontic status following treatment. This was a requirement of their NHS contract but the provider used this method to measure the success of treatment for their private patients as well.

The practice had a dedicated decontamination room for the cleaning and sterilisation of their equipment. Staff were aware of the processes and practices essential to prevent the transmission of infections and to provide clean safe care.
