Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. We observed that staff promoted people’s independence. For example, we saw people making breakfast and getting themselves ready for the day. One person told us they had made breakfast, and the staff helped them to cook lunch. They said staff had helped them to choose what clothes they wanted to wear so they could get ready for the day ahead.

People were provided with choices of daily activities they preferred to take part in. One person told us they had been to the cinema the evening before, and the movie was fabulous, they said they were going out to an arts and crafts class. Another person said they were going to a dance group. We heard a third person talking to a staff member about their plans for the day of shopping and cooking. A relative told us their loved one attended a day centre during the week and took part in activities such as sailing, bowling and tennis. Another relative said their loved one was always exceeding busy, they were out and about every day and they attended college twice a week.
