14 April 2014

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We followed up on our inspection of 10 June 2013 to check that action had been taken to meet one of the essential standards of quality and safety. An inspector undertook the follow up inspection on 14 April 2014. We reviewed the areas of concern and gathered evidence in relation to the requirements relating to workers.

Below is a summary of what we found. The summary is based on a review of records and information the provider showed us in relation to requirements relating to workers. We reviewed eight staff files and spoke to two members of staff. We found the provider met the standards.

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff. The provider operated effective recruitment procedures in order to ensure that staff, employed by the practice, were of good character and had the appropriate qualifications, skills and experience. When reviewing staff files we found that recruitment information and records mostly followed appropriate guidance and regulation. The provider had a recruitment process which ensured people were cared for by reliable trustworthy staff. There were effective procedures in place to make sure that people were protected from unsafe practice.

The provider's recruitment process ensured compliance with their own equal opportunities policy. Staff reported that they felt supported, valued and felt they were treated fairly and consistently. We noted from the staff files that each member of staff had a job description and contract of employment. Staff told us they were clear about their roles and responsibilities. This meant that staff understood the decisions they were required to make, knew what they were responsible for as well as being clear about the limits of authority.

10 June 2013

During a routine inspection

People who used the service experienced effective, safe, appropriate care and treatment. We were told by people who used the service that they had always felt that the staff and dentists were "excellent" and the care was said by one person to be "better to none" and that they were "100% satisfied" by the care and treatment the received from the service.

We found treatment options had been discussed with the patients, along with the cost involved. People confirmed that they always discussed their options with the dentists prior to any work being carried out.

We saw there were safeguarding policies in place.

We found that the service was clean and hygienic with a well established cleaning protocol in place. We were told by people who use the service that it was 'always spotless' the cleanliness was 'immaculate'. The service undertakes regular anonymous Quality Assurance Questionnaires (QA) to ensure that they are continuing to provide a good service.

Staff recruitment and selection however did not meet all legal requirements and could put the people who used the service at risk
