During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our previous inspection of 14 February 2014, we found minor concerns with this standard. This was because the area used for handling clean instruments did not have continuous surfaces which were easy to clean. Areas in the surgery and decontamination room, where instruments were cleaned ready for use, were dusty. Keyboards used in the treatment areas were not wipe-clean and there was only one mop being used for all areas, including the toilet and surgery.

At our inspection of 10 July 2014, we found that necessary action had been taken to address the concerns. There was an effective operation of systems in place designed to prevent, detect and control the spread of infection.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who had used the service for a number of years. They told us that they were happy with the treatment they received there. One person said, 'The treatment has been very good and they have always fixed us up. They give you advice on oral health and hygiene.'

People told us that they were given clear information about their planned treatment options and the estimated costs. This meant they could make informed decisions. One person told us, 'I got a written plan with the costs and it included a chart'. Another person said, 'I don't generally bother with the treatment plan. The options and costs are always explained. We discuss it. To me, they know what they are doing and I am happy to let them do it.'

We saw that some areas of the premises were not adequately cleaned. We also found that the provider did not have robust systems in place to provide them with up to date information on which to assess the cleanliness of the service and the effectiveness of their current infection control practices.

Staff were suitably trained and supported to deliver treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. People spoke in a complimentary way about the staff at the service.

People told us that they had never had to raise any complaints about the service. There was a complaints system in place. Information about complaints and comments was available to people who used the service.
