Date of assessment: 10 November 2025. St Martin’s Residential and Nursing Home is a ‘care home’ providing support for a maximum of 40 people. On the day of the inspection, 34 people were living at the service.

This is the first assessment of this location while operated by Sanctuary Care Limited and as a result the assessment looked at all the key questions; safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Following the assessment we have rated the service good in all areas.

People were protected from all forms of abuse and staff had the skills to meet people’s needs. Managers had not always made prompt referrals to the local authority. However, following feedback this issue was promptly resolved.

People’s needs were identified and risks associated with their specific needs were assessed.

The service was clean, and most staff understood how to manage infection control risks. All necessary checks had been completed to ensure the safety of the environment and equipment.

Staff were safely recruited and appropriately deployed to ensure people’s needs were promptly met.

Medicines were managed safely. Staff had received training on a recently introduced digital recording system.

Staff were kind, compassionate and enjoyed their role caring for people. They told us they were well supported by the registered manager who listened to them and acted upon suggestions they made.

Staff had some understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). Although best interest decisions were not always carried out with regard to specific decisions and the provider was working addressing this, all necessary applications had been made to the local authority.

There were systems and processes to support the registered manager to identify and address quality concerns and risks to the organisation, however, not all were effective in identifying shortfalls. The provider was addressing this, and a deputy manager had been recently recruited to support the registered manager. The provider visited the service regularly to support the management team and monitor performance.

People's experience of the service

Updated 5 November 2025

We observed staff interacting with people and used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. We saw support was provided compassionately and was not rushed.

People and their relatives were complimentary of the staff. People and relatives told us staff were “very patient and caring”. People had confidence in the management of the home and any concerns they raised had been acted upon.

Activities had been organised by staff. In addition, an external company visited and provided chair-based exercises.
