All Inspections

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We carried out a follow-up review of Padstow Dental Practice following our initial inspection on 19th July 2013, when we identified areas where the provider was not fully compliant. The Commission had received an action plan from the provider along with supplementary evidence, which detailed how they intended to address the areas of concern.

We have not revisited Padstow Dental Practice or spoken with people who used the service as part of this review because the practice were able to demonstrate they were meeting the standards without the need for a visit. We asked the provider to tell us, with supporting evidence, how they had complied with the outcome identified as non-compliant at the last inspection.

We were satisfied that people were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed.

19 July 2013

During a routine inspection

We received feedback from five people who were patients at the dental practice. People told us they were happy with the practice and felt they were treated with respect and dignity by the dentist and staff at the practice.

People made positive comments about staff and indicated they felt safe and well cared for. One person told us, "My care has been very good here' another person remarked, 'I have complete confidence in their professional ability'.

People told us and we saw evidence that high standards of care and welfare were operating at the practice. Staff were trained appropriately to deal with medical emergencies and necessary emergency procedures were in place alongside current stocks of emergency medications and oxygen cylinders.

The premises were clean and well maintained. Decontamination procedures were not fully aligned with Department of Health guidance on decontamination in primary dental care.

We looked at four sets of patient notes and observed these included a medical history and were regularly updated to ensure they accurately reflected treatment discussions and choices.

There were sufficient numbers of suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff employed at the practice to ensure the health and safety of service users.
