Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.
Relatives consistently described staff as kind, compassionate and respectful. One relative told us the provider gave them "peace of mind" by ensuring their family member was safe, well supported and able to continue enjoying activities they valued, including trips out for coffee and lunch with care staff. They explained they felt "completely confident" their relative was receiving compassionate care and said, "they have made a big difference to us."
Compassion extended beyond the person receiving care to those important to them. One relative described how the provider increased support while they recovered from surgery, allowing them to focus on their own recovery without worrying about their family member. Staff also supported the person to visit their relative during this time, recognising how important maintaining those relationships was to both people. The relative told us this support had improved their own wellbeing, reduced stress and enabled them to return to work, demonstrating the provider understood that treating people with kindness and compassion also meant supporting those closest to them.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people's care, support and treatment met their needs and preferences. They took account of people's strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture, life experiences and protected characteristics.

A relative explained they had asked for fewer carers to support their loved one because familiar faces helped reduce anxiety associated with his cognitive impairment. The provider listened to this request, reviewed the person's support arrangements and maintained continuity of care. The relative told us the care worker had developed a positive relationship with their loved one and provided care in a way that helped him feel comfortable, reassured and well supported.

Healthcare professionals also recognised the provider's personalised approach. One professional told us the registered manager demonstrated "a holistic awareness of the gentleman's life and environment and how these impacted on his needs." They described how support was adapted as the person's moving and handling needs changed, ensuring care continued to reflect the person's individual circumstances and preferences.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people's independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People and those important to them were involved in decisions about care, with support reviewed and adapted as required. One relative told us additional support was introduced following discussions with the registered manager as their family member's needs increased, helping them remain safely at home while continuing to make choices about their care.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people's needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people's needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.
Relatives consistently described an exceptionally responsive and flexible service that adapted quickly when people's circumstances changed. One relative told us support was arranged within hours when their family members dementia worsened unexpectedly. They described the registered manager as "always available and so flexible with our requests," explaining that support was reviewed and adjusted without delay whenever their change occurred. This included altering visit times to enable them to continue attending church whilst remaining confident their family member was safe, comfortable and well supported at home. Rather than expecting people to fit around existing schedules, the provider shaped support around what mattered most to people and those important to them. This proactive and highly personalised approach reduced anxiety, maintained valued routines and relationships, and enabled people to remain living safely in their own home despite changing needs.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported them to deliver person-centred care.
Staff consistently described managers as approachable and supportive. They told us they could seek advice whenever needed, including through on-call arrangements, and managers worked with them to resolve practical issues such as care recording, access to rotas and training. Staff also described opportunities for ongoing learning and development, helping them feel supported to carry out their roles effectively.
