Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

We saw staff spending time with people, making sure people felt included in conversations and activities. The service had a protected time, where staff stopped non-essential tasks and spent time with people who were cared for in bed. This had a positive impact on people’s wellbeing. We heard a person talking to a member of staff, they said “You have made my day, I love our chats….. you always make me smile and laugh.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People's initial assessments explored people's individual needs. This included their work history, family connections, hobbies, interests and what mattered to them including any goals for the future. This information was reflected in peoples care plans and was regularly reviewed and updated. Staff had knowledge of people’s unique backgrounds, cultures and strengths The chef made sure people had food options they liked and involved people in menu planning, for example, we saw the chef had spent time with people and had planned meals to meet their cultural needs.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People’s care plans included their desired outcomes and goals. The manager was working with people to enable them to express their wishes, for example a person who wished to go to the local pub, went to the pub regularly. We saw staff encouraging people to do as much as possible for themselves, there was a drink station in the dining room, staff encouraged people to choose and make their drinks as independently as possible.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

People's care plans contained important information about their medical conditions, documentation showed people were supported to gain medical advice and treatment when required. Nurses had a robust understanding of people's needs; they arranged reviews with appropriate health care professionals and adjusted people’s care plans to reflect when changes were made. For example, A person with a health condition required routine input from the GP. Staff regularly updated the person’s care plan to ensure all staff had access to the most recent information and could support the person effectively.

We saw staff asking people if they were warm enough and making sure extra blankets were within people’s reach if they felt cold.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff retention was very good; most of the staff had worked at the service for over 5 years. Staff told us the culture was positive, and everyone worked together. A staff member told us “The staff are kind, hardworking, and show genuine support, empathy, and passion for their work."

All staff we spoke with told us flexible working was promoted, and workplace adjustments were made where needed.
