Our current view of the service

Good

Updated 14 May 2025

Date of Assessment: 4 June to 16 June 2025. The service is a care home providing support to adults with mental and physical health needs. Some people were living with dementia. At the time of our assessment 20 people were living at the home. This was the first assessment of this newly registered service. We carried out the assessment to provide a rating for the service. The assessment was also triggered by some concerns we had received about the service. We found the provider had taken steps to address concerns and the service had made some positive changes. The provider had systems in place to ensure lessons were learnt and improvements made following accidents and incidents. People had access to healthcare professionals and staff took notice of their guidance in order to support people well. People received their medicines as prescribed by staff who were competent in medicine administration. Risks associated with people’s care and support were identified and managed to keep people safe. Staff received training and were supported by the management team. People had access to a range of social activities and were supported to access the activities they enjoyed. Staff were kind and caring and supported people in line with their preferences. Systems and processes were in place to ensure the service was monitored and actions were taken when improvements were required.

People's experience of the service

People and relatives we spoke with gave mixed views about the service and support provided. Relatives generally felt there were not enough staff around to meet people’s needs and this had led to different incidents occurring. One relative said, “The carers are fabulous but there are not enough of them. We go regularly and some days there are 3 staff and other days 5 staff. The staff are run off their feet.” Another person said, “Residents are left on their own in the lounge.” People and relatives praised the staff for their kind and caring approach. One relative said, “I have nothing but praise for them [staff]. They treat everyone the same, they go above and beyond to make us welcome.” Another relative said, “I think it’s a great place myself; I have not got any problems.” Some relatives said not all staff were trained well. One relative said, “I know they don’t have the right training.” However, other relatives told us staff received appropriate training. One relative said, “They [staff] can do their job well and they are well trained. They are learning as they go along with [family member]. People and relatives told us staff followed safe hygiene practices to prevent cross infection. People and relatives were involved in reviews about their care. One relative said, “Yes they [staff] ask us what we think and ask if they can try things and ask for our opinions.” People were involved in everyday choices and made decisions about choice of food and how they wanted to spend their day. One relative said, “[Family member] gets choices of drinks, they get up when they want and goes to bed when they want. [Family member] sits watching the television most of the time and they do activities daily.”
