Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there were effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.

Staff provided care and treatment in line with current guidance. They treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.

Prodenta is in the London Borough of Wandsworth and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

The practice had 2 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 9 staff, of which there were 2 dentists, 2 dental nurses, 1 dental therapist, 1 oral surgeon, 1 orthodontist, 1 endodontist and the practice manager. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including the principal dentist, 2 dental nurses and the practice manager.

Two weeks before our inspection, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We received feedback from 18 patients. Patient feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice.

Comments included, “Amazing care from the team at Prodenta, always professional, kind and high quality.”

Patients commented positively about the standards of cleanliness.

Patients felt able to book appointments within an acceptable timescale for their needs and said they had enough time during their appointment without feeling rushed.

Patients told us they were given clear information to help them make an informed choice about their treatment and any associated costs. They were involved in decisions about their care. Comments included “Excellent service and care. Very clear communication from both dentist and orthodontist so it has always been very clear what treatment is needed and why” and “very competent treatment and I felt well looked after. She explained what was going to happen at each stage and made sure I was comfortable”

Patients said when they were prescribed medicines, sufficient information was given.

Patients told us that they were supported to maintain their oral health and were provided with appropriate information and resources.

The practice shared patient feedback with the team. We were told this was reviewed and where suggestions had been made, appropriate action would be taken.

Background

Prodenta is a dental practice located in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The premises are on the ground floor of a building situated in a high-street location. There is one treatment room, a dedicated decontamination room, an administrative office, a waiting room with reception area, and a patient toilet.

The practice provides private services to adults and children. The practice offers a range of dental services including routine examinations and treatment, veneers, extractions, crowns and bridges and some minor orthodontic treatments.

The staff structure of the practice consists of a principal dentist and a trainee dental nurse.

The practice opening hours are from 8.00am to 6.00pm on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, from 9.00am to 5.00pm on Wednesday, and from 9.00am to 8.00pm on Thursday. The practice is also open in the morning on alternate Saturdays.

The principal dentist was the registered manager. A registered manager is a person who is registered with the CQC to manage the service. Like registered providers, they are ‘registered persons’. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated Regulations about how the practice is run.

The inspection took place over one day and was carried out by a CQC inspector and a dental specialist advisor.

Six people provided feedback about the service. Patients were positive about the care they received from the practice. They were complimentary about the friendly and caring attitude of the dental staff.

Our key findings were:

  • Patients’ needs were assessed and care was planned in line with current guidance such as from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
  • There were effective systems in place to reduce and minimise the risk and spread of infection.
  • The practice had effective safeguarding processes in place and staff understood their responsibilities for safeguarding adults and children living in vulnerable circumstances.
  • Equipment, such as the air compressor, autoclave (steriliser), fire extinguishers, and X-ray equipment had all been checked for effectiveness and had been regularly serviced.
  • Patients indicated that they felt they were listened to and that they received good care from a helpful and caring practice team.
  • The practice ensured staff maintained the necessary skills and competence to support the needs of patients.
  • The practice had implemented clear procedures for managing comments, concerns or complaints.
  • The provider had a clear vision for the practice and staff told us they were well supported by the principal dentist.
  • Governance arrangements and audits were effective in improving the quality and safety of the services.

There were areas where the provider could make improvements and should:

  • Review the practice’s arrangements for receiving and responding to patient safety alerts, recalls and rapid response reports issued from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and through the Central Alerting System (CAS), as well as from other relevant bodies such as, Public Health England (PHE).
  • Review the practice’s system for the recording, investigating and reviewing incidents or significant events with a view to preventing further occurrences and ensuring that improvements are made as a result.
  • Review the practice’s sharps procedures giving due regard to the Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013.
