Birkinshaw Aesthetics and Wellbeing Ltd is an independent clinic located in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The service is operated by a single practitioner, who is a registered nurse.

The provider is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 in respect of some, but not all, of the services it provides. There are some exemptions from regulation by CQC which relate to particular types of regulated activities and services, and these are set out in Schedule 2 of The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

The provider is registered with CQC to deliver the regulated activity of Treatment of Disease, Disorder or Injury. We did not assess, or report on, those services that are outside the scope of CQC registration. Therefore, we only assessed the provision of treatments relating to hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), menopause, and vitamin B12 injections.

This is the first assessment for this location since their registration with CQC. At this assessment we reviewed the location’s performance in the key questions safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The service is rated good overall and in the key questions safe, effective, caring and responsive. The service is rated requires improvement in the key question well-led. We found breaches of regulation in relation to good governance and have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

The service had a positive culture of safety, learning, and incident management, with audits and infection prevention and control processes in place. However, there were gaps in medicines oversight, record‑keeping, GP communication, and audit trails for prescriptions. Premises safety checks lacked effective oversight, and risk‑assessment actions were not always appropriately addressed.

The provider carried out thorough assessments, involved people in decisions, and followed evidence‑based practice supported by audits. They supported people to manage their health. Consent processes were well documented. However, communication with GPs was inconsistent.

The provider treated people with kindness and respect, and feedback from service users was positive. The provider supported individual needs and involved people in decisions about their care and treatment.

The provider communicated effectively with service users, offered flexible and supportive treatment, and sought to improve the service based on feedback.

Systems to support effective leadership and governance were not fully established. There were gaps in oversight of prescriptions, record keeping, information sharing, and the maintenance of accurate policies and service information. Although the provider acknowledged these concerns and had begun taking steps to improve, further work was needed to ensure governance, safety oversight and information management were effective and fully embedded into the service.
