All Inspections

22 November 2013

During a routine inspection

During this inspection we spoke with three people who used the service, a fourth person was being supported by one member of staff in the community. We spoke with two members of staff, a visiting professional and examined two people's care records. The records told us about their needs and what support staff provided to them to help them access the community and to meet their health and welfare. Records were comprehensive but did not always reflect people's current needs.

We looked at people's medication and saw there were system's in place to make sure people received their medication safely. However we noted an error had been made and could not see how the service regularly audited medication to make sure it was given appropriately.

Staffing ratios were not always sufficient to support people with a one to one staffing ratio whilst in the community, which meant at times people were not able to partake in their regular activities.

The environment was appropriate to people's needs and was well maintained. The service was well managed and staff were clear about their roles and responsibilities. All staff were responsible for ensuring the home was cleaned to a high standard and equipment was regularly checked and maintained to ensure it remained in good working order.

28 January 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke to people who used the service who said that they felt involved in the care provided at the home. One suggestion from a person using the service was for DVD nights and this was seen to have been incorporated in the December events calendar. People who used the service told us that the staff were good and that they liked the food.

Daily entries were made into the care records which reflected care given and changes to care provided. Each entry within the care records had the related care plan number clearly notified beside the entry demonstrating that the daily care provided was in relation to the agreed plan of care.

Staff that we spoke to were able to demonstrate a knowledge of the safeguarding policy and ways of dealing with safeguarding issues including the whistleblowing policy.

All staff except two have achieved NVQ level 2 and the two who haven't achieved this yet are working towards achieve this. This demonstrates a sufficient level of appropriately qualified and skilled staff.

The staff who we spoke to told us that they could request additional training and this was provided. An example of this was a request for Personality Disorder training that has been requested and organised.

During a routine inspection

People's privacy, dignity and independence were respected.

We spoke with four of the five people living in Wings. They told us that they were very happy with the care they received. They told us that they were supported to live the way they wanted to live and were able to make their own minds up about what decisions they took. They were complimentary about the people who supported them.
