During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who used the service to find out what it was like to live at the home.

One person told us that they were happy living at the home and that the staff supported them to do lots of activities. Another person told us that they had recently visited the zoo and they had enjoyed the day out.

During the Inspection visit we observed that all the staff interacted with people living at the home in a calm and confident manner and this helped to reduce people’s challenging behaviours. We also found that the staff encouraged people to be respectful to each other and this also helped to reduce people’s challenging behaviours.

We found that people living at St. Georges were well cared for and they received their medication in a safe way. We also found that the staff working at the home had robust recruitment checks carried out by the provider to ensure the safety of people living at the home and there were sufficient numbers of staff on duty.

We also saw that there were safeguarding procedures in place to ensure that people living at the home were protected from the risk of abuse.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who lived at the home and they told us the home was a nice place to live. One person said the staff supported them to go out and that they were planning a trip to the theatre. Another person told us that they enjoyed cooking. We observed that the person had made a cake with the help of staff and people enjoyed eating it.

We observed staff using de-escalation and low-arousal techniques to keep a calm environment at the home. We also saw how staff managed the behaviour of one person by taking people and staff to a safe area of the home while allowing the person to calm down on their own accord. We observed that the person was able to regain control of their behaviour and rejoin the rest of the household once they felt better.

However, some of the staff we spoke with raised concerns that sometimes there were not enough staff on duty. They told us that low staff numbers often compromised the safety of people using the service and members of staff. We spoke with the registered manager about this and they told us that they had recently recruited two new members of staff which would make a difference to the staffing levels. They also told us that they were in the process of reviewing the number of staff required to look after each person and that this may also improve staffing levels at the home.
