Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The practice treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. Feedback from the National GP Patient Survey was positive, with the practice receiving higher than average scores in the majority of areas. For example, 84% of patientsdescribed their overall experience of this GP practice as good, which was 10% higher than the national average.

Leaders told us they had a register of patients registered as carers and provided advice and direction as required. Staff told us bereaved patients were sent sympathy cards, were offered regular check-ins and signposted to services for support if required. Clinical staff told us as part of their training they were supported and received training in communication skills to support patients who were upset or angry. Staff told us confidentiality clauses were contained in their contract and as part of their on-line training.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The practice treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. This was demonstrated in positive feedback received via the practice survey.

Leaders told us their patient registration form asked patients to inform the service about their personal, cultural, social and religious needs and communication requirements. These were electronically coded onto patient records to ensure their needs could be met.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The practice promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff helped patients and their carers to access advocacy and community-based services.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The practice listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

There was a system for appointment triage that ensured people with immediate needs had access to services. Staff we spoke with knew the process for referral to emergency support, including mental health crisis teams.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The practice cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to deliver person-centred care.

Staff told us they were valued by leaders. Leaders had taken steps to recognise and meet the wellbeing needs of staff, which included the necessary resources and facilities for safe working, such as regular breaks and rest areas. Staff reported being supported if they were struggling at work. We saw team building days were established in the practice. The provider had implemented staff surveys which demonstrated a high level of satisfaction in the workplace.
