During an assessment under our new approach

Date of Assessment: 19th May 30th May 2025

St Nectans Residential Care Home provides accommodation and support for up to 35 older people, some of whom were living with dementia. There were 31 people living at the service when we inspected. This is the first assessment for this service since it registered on 11 August 2023.

This assessment was planned in response to concerns raised about the delivery of safe care and leadership at the service.

We did not identify any significant issues during this assessment, and the service has been rated Good.

During this assessment, we found that systems and processes to support people’s safety had not always been followed. We observed people’s individual physical risks were being managed safely but care plans needed minor development for managing people who lived with complex mental health needs and for those who health needs had recently changed. These were fully discussed and addressed immediately and therefore risk was mitigated. The provider had not consistently ensured sufficient numbers of suitably trained staff were deployed to meet people’s health and social needs, and not all staff had received the necessary training or regular supervision to support people safely. We received confirmation that staff training had now been completed and had immediately looked at deployment of staff and placed an extra member of staff on duty. The environment was well maintained, and following feedback during the assessment, the provider immediately reviewed environmental risk assessments, to ensure that stairs were safe for people. Overall the management of medicines was safe and people received their medicines in a timely way, Further raining for medicine givers was promptly arranged to ensure best practice guidance was followed by all staff. During the assessment process we received mixed feedback regarding the culture of the service and the provider has immediately put systems in place to support staff to speak up in a safe place and introduced training in conflict resolution.

The provider was receptive to our feedback and had started implementing improvements quickly to mitigate risk to people. We received an immediate action plan from the provider during the assessment process.

Information gathered from accidents and incidents, and feedback was effectively used to make changes and improvements to the quality of care. People enjoyed their meals and were supported by staff to follow a healthy lifestyle. Staff treated people with kindness and compassion, and visitors were welcomed and kept informed of their loved one’s care. People were encouraged to remain as independent as possible. The provider had liaised with external health professionals to provide joined up care and treatment for people. The Staff and management knew people well, and this had ensured risk was minimised. Staff were seen to be kind and respectful to people.
