Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 9 October 2024

Date of Assessment: 12 to19 March 2025. This service is a residential care home providing support to older people, some of whom are living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, 48 people were living in the service.

We found 2 breaches of the legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment and governance. Risks to people’s safety were not well managed and the provider’s governance systems were not effective in identifying or addressing concerns.

The provider did not have a robust process in place for investigating and learning from incidents and safeguarding concerns. The facilities and equipment in the service were not always clean and well-maintained with any risks mitigated.

People’s care was not always person-centred. Assessments of people’s needs lacked detail. Information about people’s care needs was not always up to date and accurate. It was not always clear how people had been involved in making decisions about their care. Processes for monitoring people’s health were not always robust. It was not always clear whether people had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. People’s capacity to make decisions and give consent was not always documented clearly. The provider did not always demonstrate a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

There were enough staff available to meet people’s needs. Staff had received relevant training and understood their roles and responsibilities. Staff managed people’s medicines safely. People were encouraged to maintain relationships with family and friends.

People's experience of the service

Updated 9 October 2024

We received mixed feedback from people, and those important to them, about how well the provider listened to and addressed feedback and concerns. People did not always feel their requests were responded to appropriately. People’s relatives did not always feel they were kept updated about relevant changes and whilst some felt the communication from the provider was good, others felt it could be improved.

We received mixed feedback about the quality and range of meal options available and about the social activities provided. Comments included, “The food could be better, it is not attractive on the plate”, “My views are not asked for, you get set food, but it is nice and varied” and “The previous activities person left before Christmas. There used to be 2, now there’s only 1. It is much too busy for them.”

Some people could not directly tell us about their experience. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. This approach showed us there was a lack of meaningful, personalised activities and engagement for people.

Despite these concerns, people told us they were generally happy living in the service and they spoke positively about the staff, telling us they were kind and friendly. Comments included, “They are kind and nice to you”, “Staff are brilliant. They are respectful and they are professional”, “They are wonderful, very kind” and “It’s lovely here, the staff are nice and they take care of everybody.”
