Date of assessment: 30 June 14 July 2026
The Garth Care Home with Nursing is a residential care home, providing personal care for up to 34 younger and older adults with support needs and dementia.

An unannounced assessment took place and was a follow up to the inspection undertaken in August 2025, to review the quality of care. At the last inspection in August 2025, the service was rated inadequate and was in breach of regulations relating to person centred care, dignity and respect, safe care and treatment, safeguarding and good governance.
The provider had requested the home be reassessed and told us significant improvements have been made since the last assessment.
At the time of the assessment the service supported 16 people, all 16 people were in receipt of personal care. We reviewed care records, spoke with people, staff, relatives and leaders. We assessed the home against all quality statements.

At this assessment the overall rating for The Garth Care Home with Nursing is good. This is based upon the findings at this assessment.

This service has been in Special Measures since 13 November 2025. The provider demonstrated significant improvements have been made. The service is no longer rated as inadequate overall or in any of the key questions. Therefore, this service is no longer in Special Measures and is now rated overall as good.

Since the previous assessment, the provider has strengthened the leadership structure through the appointment of a new Nominated Individual, Registered Manager and Clinical Lead. All three members of the leadership team were present and actively engaged during both days of the assessment visit. The management team had implemented a range of governance and quality assurance processes to improve oversight and drive service improvement. We reviewed evidence of regular audits undertaken by the management team, including environmental audits, care plan audits, daily walkaround checks, accident and incident reviews, and other quality monitoring activities. These processes supported the identification of areas for improvement and helped ensure standards were monitored effectively.

The provider and new management team had developed a comprehensive action plan which included a programme of environmental improvements and refurbishment works. We observed that the ground floor had been redecorated, creating a more welcoming, comfortable and homely environment for people using the service. The Registered Manager outlined plans to continue refurbishment throughout the home, and these plans were reflected within the service's ongoing improvement plan.

Care plans reviewed during the assessment were detailed, person-centred and reflected individuals' assessed needs and preferences. Staff demonstrated a good understanding of people's support requirements, as well as their personal histories and backgrounds, which helped to promote personalised care. We also saw evidence that the service had begun implementing Mental Capacity Assessments and Best Interests decision-making processes. While further development was required in this area, this had been identified by the service and was included within the ongoing action plan for improvement.

People's experience of the service

Updated 23 April 2026

We gained feedback from 4 people living at the service and 7 relatives. People and their relatives were all positive, in their feedback about the home. As part of the assessment, we also used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI), a structured tool that enables us to observe care and understand the experiences of people who were unable to communicate with us directly. All of our observations we saw between staff and people were positive.
One person told us, “It’s lovely here, staff are especially good”. Another person told us, “I like living here and the staff are good”.
One relative told us, “They are happy and safe living here, the home is always clean and their room is always clean and well kept”.
