During a routine inspection

We did not speak to the families of people who had arranged end of life home care for their relatives because of their recent bereavements. The agency had a formal process for collecting feedback from relatives two to three months after the nursing contract had ended, and we saw recent examples. One relative described the service as "brilliant and compassionate".

Appropriate medical and personal information was taken from people and their doctors to ensure that home nursing care was suitable. Risk assessments were carried out to ensure people's safety. Each person's care plan was tailored to their specific needs.

Care was taken to assure a smooth handover from hospital services to care in the home. Macmillan nurses were usually involved in the arrangements and contact with the person's doctor was maintained throughout the duration of their care at home.

Suitably qualified and experienced staff worked in shifts, and in small teams to provide continuity for the person being cared for. All staff had undertaken annual mandatory training and also provided evidence of their experience of cancer care in a hospital setting.

It was not possible to speak directly with people who use the service, but we spoke to friends and relatives who had arranged their care. People we spoke with were happy with the service. They felt that they had been given sufficient information and that their expectations had been met. All people who use the service were given an information guide, which explained how the service worked, how people could raise a concern and included a feedback questionnaire. Before people began using the service, their general practitioner or consultant provided information on their medical condition and assessments were carried out to determine the level of support required. The manager had regular contact with people who use the service and their next of kin to ensure their needs were being met. People were cared for by staff who had undergone the relevant pre-employment checks and had the necessary skills.

During a routine inspection

There are currently no people who use the service in their own home and therefore no comments were made. Hospitals that contracted with the agency that commented were satisfied with the performance, competence and manner in which the nurses supplied conducted themselves.
