During a routine inspection

We visited Braywood Gardens on 22 September 2011. Due to the complex needs of some people living at Braywood Gardens we were unable to talk with them and gain their views. We therefore spent time observing how they spent their day and the support they received from staff.

We also spoke with seven people using services and they all said they were happy and settled living at Braywood Gardens and their needs were met.

One person said their relative had dealt with their admission and received all the information they needed.

One person said they were spending the day at the home to see if they liked it before they made a decision to move in.

Two people knew they had a plan of care in place and that they could see this is if they wanted to, however both stated that they did not feel the need as staff supported them in the way that they liked. Whereas three people spoken with did not know they had a plan of care in place; however they also felt staff knew their preferences.

Two people said staff always asked them their consent before they supported them.

Five people said there were some activities arranged, however they would like more to do. One person said that they were bored as they simply sat around for most of the day.

Two people said they were looked after well and staff were very attentive to their needs. Three people said they could see the doctor and other professionals such as the dentist when they needed to.

Four people said that they could make their own choices and decisions about how they spend their time and the support that they received.

One person said: 'the staff are marvellous, they lift your spirits and cheer you up with their banter, singing and dancing. I have a very good relationship with staff; they listen to me and act upon what I say.'

Another person said: 'I have good relationships with staff; they care about us and respect us.'

Three people said staff were very busy and seemed to be short of staff at times, but this was not often and they did not feel it impacted upon their care.
