All Inspections

4 October 2013

During a routine inspection

On the day of our inspection the unit was found to be a clean, hygienic and welcoming environment. People we spoke with told us that the unit had improved since refurbishment and that they now felt that the environment was a much better one. Some people said that they found the nurses to be caring and helpful and one person told us that they would have found it "difficult to cope without the support and smiles of the nursing staff." Another told us that they found the environment to be "calming and positive" and this had made the "treatment bearable."

We looked at comment cards and a selection of the commendations about the unit. We also reviewed care records and spoke with people who used the service who told us that they were well informed and felt in control of their treatment at all times. People told us that they felt safe and well cared for in a clean and hygienic setting. Some people told us that they were "impressed by the level of knowledge" and felt confident that they were receiving the "best possible treatment" as they had been given the latest information and time to review it before making a final decision.

There were enough staff on duty to meet peoples needs. We spoke with staff that were on duty on the day of our inspection and they demonstrated a knowledge of local policies and procedures. There were arrangements in place to monitor the quality of services provided.

19 March 2013

During a routine inspection

One patient told us that everything was presented to her and she had felt informed and listened to. She added that staff were accommodating to relatives which made things easier for her.

Patients who use the service told us that their privacy and dignity was maintained. All consultations were carried out in individual consulting rooms.

Staff told us they were supported by their manager and all received an annual appraisal. All staff undertook mandatory training and as part of that had to complete their vulnerable adult and safeguarding children training.

We found evidence that the unit assessed and monitored the quality of services effectively.

One patient who used the service told us that she 'could not think of anything to improve on'. She said the service was 'very professional, efficient and caring as well'.
