During a routine inspection

During our inspection we looked at the care records for four people who received care from Home Instead Senior Care. We saw that people were fully involved in their care planning and were able to have a choice of care workers to help them. They told us they were happy with the care they received, and their comments included 'I'm extremely grateful to [my care workers] and pleased with everything they do' and '[The care workers] are very kind. I like them all'. People told us they had been made aware of how to make complaints if they were dissatisfied with any aspect of the service. They also said that if a care worker made their meals they could choose what they wanted, and care workers always wore personal protective clothing, such as disposable gloves and aprons, when carrying out personal care.

Care workers told us they had been trained in food hygiene and infection control, and they had also been given an overview of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 during their induction training. They said they were provided with all the protective clothing they required, and they could collect extra supplies from the office at any time.

We saw that Home Instead Senior Care had a robust recruitment policy to help ensure staff members were of good character and had the required skills to perform their work.

During a routine inspection

We visited the agency in August 2011 and found concerns about the unsafe use and management of medication. After this visit we issued a compliance action. The provider then sent us an action plan to tell us they were compliant and this visit was carried out to check compliance.

'I think they are knowledgeable about 'X's' needs', 'We are quite happy with the care', 'They have contacted us a couple of times to make sure we are still happy with the service', 'They show respect and maintain my husbands dignity that's all I can say really',

'Carers' check medication has been taken before they leave it is never left out as far as I know', 'There is a folder with the care plan at the front and there have been a couple of changes since it was written', 'Lady contacted me from the agency to see if the service is working Ok', 'There is a care plan in the house the girls write in it all drinks and meals are recorded', 'I have experience of other care agencies and Home Instead compare very favourably'

'They arrive promptly always the same carers and if the regular carer is off they tell me who will be visiting'
