During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 26 February 2013, we spoke with one person who uses the service, eight relatives, the manager and staff on duty.

The person we spoke with told us they enjoyed their stays at Faro Lodge and told us the staff let them choose what to eat and asked them what they wanted to do. They told us they always felt safe when they came to stay.

Relatives we spoke with were very complimentary about the service, and said that it was 'A fantastic place and the staff are wonderful'. They also told us they were kept informed of what was happening to their relative.

Care plans gave staff suitable guidance for them to follow to ensure they were able to provide the care and support that each person needed. Risks to individuals had been assessed.

Staff had undergone sufficient training relevant to their role, so they were able to offer people the support they needed. Staff had received regular supervision and an annual appraisal of their development. They told us they felt supported by the manager and the staff team.

Relatives and the one person we spoke with told us they would be comfortable talking with staff should they wish to raise a concern. Two relatives told us where they had raised issues in the past they have been dealt with to their satisfaction.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with three people who use the service and saw staff helping a further two people who do not speak. We saw all people who use the service.

People told us that they were happy with the service. They also told us that their care workers were, 'Very good'. They stated that staff knew Makaton, a sign language and used it to communicate with some people who did not have any other form of speaking ability. People who use the service also used Makaton to communicate amongst themselves.

People stated that there were enough staff on duty at each shift, days and nights. One person told us that they use a call bell and that staff attend to them without delay during the day and night.

People told us that they felt safe and protected both in Faro Lodge and also when they went out. One person explained, 'No one will hurt me, if anything happens I would tell staff and they would help me.' They also explained that they preferred staff to keep their money safe and confirmed that they were signing the records for transactions and expenditure.

People told us that they were happy with the medication process and with the staff administering it for them. They also confirmed that food and choices were good as well as cleanliness and all modern facilities are provided.
