Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.At our last inspection we rated this key question good. At this inspection the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.People and their relatives told us staff were kind and caring. People told us they were happy and confident, information about their care and support needs was only shared as needed. We observed many kind and affectionate interactions during the inspection. People were welcomed into the service with the support of the ‘residents ambassador’ they helped staff to orientate to the service as well as providing spiritual support. A health and social care professional said staff skills and approach within the service were kind and positive. Feedback received was positive about staff kindness and their approach.

Treating people as individuals

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.People told us they were treated with dignity and their individuality respected, their relatives agreed. Staff told us they would support people regardless of their background. Staff and people living at the service were from diverse backgrounds, beliefs and cultures. Inclusivity was embedded within the service; this was demonstrated by the effort to celebrate different cultures and customs through social events. We observed many occasions where people’s choices and preferences were sought and carried out. Spiritual and emotional needs were considered a priority by the service, supporting people of all faiths and values to find comfort. Health and social care professionals told us the service followed up individual treatment plans in a timely manner.

Independence, choice and control

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.People told us they had choice over how their care was delivered and how they spent their day. Relatives told us there was a variety of options for their loved ones to enjoy. They told us they could spend time with others or on their own in their bedroom, and they were pleased to have the options available to them. People were supported by staff to maintain relationships inside and outside of the service. Staff told us visitors came to the home whenever they wished, we observed this during the inspection. Staff told us of the importance of offering people choices so they could live how they wanted to. Promoting independence was a focus of the service and staff understood the importance. A member of staff told us, “The best bit about this job is there are things we don't expect residents to ever do again, they haven't done it for months and you think, well that skill is gone now, but those moments when they can be independent again are something we celebrate.” Another staff member said, “I love the little moments with people, when they can regain a skill.” Staff had access to people’s records on the electronic care planning system. Choice was embedded into the service in all policies and procedures.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff respond to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.People told us staff were responsive to their changing needs. Records showed staff were attentive and measures were taken to ensure people’s ongoing comfort. This had included seeking emergency medical support as required. We observed staff attending to people’s requests throughout the inspection. A relative told us, “I am confident my loved one is as happy here as you can hope for, and it's the team and everything they do that are the reason for that. I don't have to worry about them, they are safe and happy here.” Staff understood the need to be adaptable for people. The service had multiple opportunities to discuss people’s needs, this included daily, weekly and monthly meetings, handovers and reviews.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.Staff wellbeing was a key focus for the provider and the registered manager. Staff told us there were several recognition schemes which gave them the opportunity to receive praise or awards. The registered manager was committed to recognising staff abilities, achievements and promoting staff development. Many staff had long service and were complimentary about their colleagues. A member of staff said, “We love working together to make the home a fun place to be, so the staff enjoy it, and residents can benefit from that.” The provider operated an employee of the month award, and a range of staff benefits and support. Staff told us they were supported by their colleagues and the senior team. Another member of staff said, “I feel very positive about working here, I love my job.”
