People told us that staff were kind and caring. People were supported to remain as independent as they wished and where possible they were consulted about how their care was carried out.

Independence, choice and control

Staff told us it was important that they promoted people’s independence, so they retained their daily living skills where possible. One staff member said, “You always ask [people] if they can do it first. Let them make their own choices. We respect their decisions as long as it is safe.” Staff had a good knowledge of people’s individual abilities, needs and preferences, which helped to ensure they supported people in a manner which they wished.

People and their relatives were positive about staff. Comments included, “They’re kind and caring” and, “Some of the staff are excellent, I know and trust them.” People told us that staff encouraged them to carry out aspects of their daily living tasks as independently as possible, which helped them to retain their skills and abilities. One person said, ‘I’m pretty independent. They [staff] let me get on. I get help when I need to, but they may take their time.” People told us they were given control and were able to make choices about their everyday life. One person told us, “Staff do involve you in decisions. For example, you get a choice of food.” Relatives told us they felt welcome to visit their loved ones when they wished.

The service had processes to ensure care plans reflected people's independence and their individual choice and control. The provider had processes in place to engage with people to help ensure their choices were considered and their independence was promoted. This included planned meetings where people could raise issues and make suggestions.
