During a routine inspection

We spoke with seven people who used the service, their relatives and six members of staff including carers, nurses, activity coordinators and the registered manager.

Although a few people felt they did not get the choices they wanted, most of the people we spoke with told us that they had a choice regarding their care and that these choices were fulfilled. People told us they were treated with privacy and dignity. We found that staff treated people with respect and consideration.

Most of the people we spoke with were happy with their care. The provider had appropriate processes in place to ensure people's needs could be met.

None of the people we spoke with had any concerns regarding how care was provided. The provider had appropriate safeguarding procedures which staff were aware of and knew how to follow.

Most of the people we spoke with were happy with the staff and felt there were enough staff to keep them safe. There was an appropriate level of staffing at the service and staff were appropriately trained.

Most of the people we spoke with had no complaints about the service. The provider had an up to date and appropriate policy and procedure to deal with complaints.

During a routine inspection

We looked at the care records of nine people, spoke with three people who use the service and six people's relatives. We also met with five members of staff and the home manager. We were unable to talk to many people due to their health problems so we observed how staff cared for them. People we spoke with told us "I am happy here, I am well cared for." Another person told us "the staff are very good, they they work hard and care."

Relatives we spoke with had a high regard for the service provided. One person told us "it was the hardest thing ever placing my relative here, and I needed to know they are well cared for, my relative has been here a few years now and the only thing that makes it easy is knowing they care and do a good job."

Another person told us they were always involved in reviews.. staff are always engaging with people its not like other places where they are just sat around."

We looked at care records of people and found that care was planned and delivered in line with people's assessed needs, and care staff had a good knowledge and understanding of people's health conditions.

We found improvements to the environment had been made following our previous inspection and this had a positive impact for people who use the service.

The service had carried out appropriate recruitment checks and record keeping was maintained.

During a routine inspection

We were not able to communicate verbally with some people so observation was significant in gaining an understanding of how well people are supported and cared for.

During observation we noted that interactions between staff and people using the service were positive and people were generally involved in tasks. People's moods were generally good and they appeared relaxed in the presence of staff.

People told us that they liked living in the home. They said that their health needs were met and that staff listened to them and provided them with the care and support they wanted and needed. Comments included; 'I like living here', 'staff help me all the time' and 'staff are kind '. People said that they were treated with respect and that they were satisfied with the vocational and social activities they could do.

People were positive about the environment of the home and most people were happy with their bedrooms. Some people told us that they had personalised their rooms. Comments included; 'my room is very pretty, I have all my own things', 'my room is nice', and 'the staff always clean my room'. However, we found evidence that some aspects of the environment were unsuitable.

People's views varied when they were asked for feedback about the meals. Most people when asked if they had enjoyed their meal indicated that they were happy with the types and quantities of the food offered. Others commented; 'most of the time the food is nice', 'the food is good sometimes'. One person commented that the food rarely met their cultural dietary needs and preferences.

Relatives of people living at Clavering Nursing Home were very positive about the home. They reported that they were always made welcome and offered a hot drink. They told us that the staff were very caring and that they were kept well informed of their relatives' care and changing needs. They felt that any concerns they might raise would be dealt with appropriately by the manager.
