Person-centred Care

Score: 3

The provider made sure people were at the centre of their care and treatment choices and they decided, in partnership with people, how to respond to any relevant changes in people’s needs.

Since 2016 all organisations that provide publicly funded adult social care are legally required to follow the Accessible Information Standard (AIS). The standard was introduced to make sure people are given information in a way they can understand. The standard applies to all people with a disability, impairment, or sensory loss and in some circumstances to their carers.

The registered manager had a good understanding of the AIS and could explain how they incorporated this, ensuring people had access to information they could understand.

Easy-read documentation was used where needed. This is a format with clear information for people with learning disabilities. People also used Makaton, signs, symbols, and pictures to be able to make informed choices and express their wishes.

The provider had processes in place that ensured people received care and support that met their preferences. Support plans and risk assessments were regularly reviewed to ensure people’s needs continued to be met, whist ensuring people continued to have maximum choice and control over their care and support needs.

Support records contained specific guidance for staff when caring for and/or supporting a person with a learning disability or were under the age of 18. Staff had received specific training in areas such as Autism Awareness that ensured people with a learning disability received care and support in their preferred way. If people were unable to express their wishes, meetings were held with their appropriate relative, advocate, or legal representative.

Staff told us the care records helped them to understand people’s choices and preferences.

Listening to and involving people

Score: 3

The provider made it easy for people to share feedback and ideas, or raise complaints about their care, treatment, and support. Staff involved people in decisions about their care and told them what had changed as a result.

Where able to, people knew how to give feedback about their experiences of care and support including how to raise any concerns or issues and can do so in a range of accessible ways. This included speaking with staff, a formal written complaint and a telephone complaint if raising issues with support staff. If people were unable to follow these processes, advocates, friends, and families could speak on their behalf.

Records showed few complaints had been received; however, appropriate policies were in place to address complaints in a timely manner.
