Eskdale House is a care home registered for accommodation for people who require nursing or personal care. The home provides personal care for older and younger adults some of whom may be living with dementia, a physical disability or a sensory need. The home is registered to accommodate up to 21 people. At the time of the inspection 15 people were resident.

This is the first rated inspection of Eskdale House.

There was a shared culture which valued people and focused on delivering safe care and support. Staff were recruited safely, trained and supported to ensure people received care and support which met their needs and preferences.

Medicines were managed safely, and staff had developed positive working relationships with healthcare partners.

The environment was clean with no malodours. Some concerns had been identified in relation to premises safety. The registered manager acted promptly to address our concerns, report them to the maintenance team and implement risk assessments. They also ensured learning across the wider organisation.

A process was in place for assessing people’s needs before they moved to Eskdale House. Care plans were detailed, and risks were assessed and mitigated. Regular reviews took place, and the registered manager was keen to ensure people, and their relatives were included in this process.

Feedback was sought from people, relatives and staff in a range of ways.

Systems and processes were in place to ensure appropriate oversight and governance.

People's experience of the service

Updated 23 September 2025

People and relatives said they felt safe and there were enough staff. They felt comfortable speaking with the leadership team and described staff as approachable and responsive. Staff had a compassionate approach which people responded to. They engaged with people in a patient and calm manner.

Some relatives said the environment could feel a little clinical at times, and there was a wish for more space where relatives could visit their loved ones in private. We fed this back to the management team.

People were supported and encouraged to be involved in their day-to-day care and support, and staff respected their wishes, encouraged independence and supported specific requests, such as seating arrangements.

Relatives told us they were involved in care planning, and staff sought information about people’s needs and preferences, especially during their move into Eskdale House. People’s needs were regularly reviewed by staff who knew them well. A relative said, “[Person] was really involved in their care plan. They really engaged well with them and had a conversation with them.” Another said, “Staff are very knowledgeable and know what [person] likes and dislikes. They support them well.”
