Caring – this means we looked for evidence the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This is the first assessment for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People told us members of staff were kind and caring. They treated people with dignity and compassion. One person said, “The carers are good and I trust them.” Another person told us, “All the carers have been very respectful with me. I trust them and they listen to me.” Relatives also talked about how happy they were with members of staff. One relative said, “The new members of staff we have had put in place are much better. They are always very polite and helpful and aware [family member] wants to do what they can.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. Members of staff understood people’s personal preferences about how they liked their care and support to be provided. One person told us, “I said I wanted female carer, who could drive (in case I needed emergency medication) and in the main this has been managed.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People told us the care and support they received was tailored to their needs. People said they felt in control and their choices were respected. One person told us, “The provider is key to my independence. I have full capacity and so I direct my own care and make my own choices about what I want and need and when.” A relative said, “[Family member] wants to brush their own teeth and shave themselves. The new carers really encourage them and are on hand to help if needed.” Another person told us, “[Members of staff] let me get on with whatever I want or need to do.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People told us they were happy with the members of staff and their quick responses when they needed anything. One person said, “SureCare Sheffield have arranged a team of people just for me and who are trained on all medications.” A relative told us, “If there are any problems, members of staff will phone straight away. They rang my another relative to say [family member] wasn’t well and they went round and called an ambulance. The member of staff stayed until the ambulance came.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. There was a culture of support for members of staff put in place by the management team. There was a compassionate approach to providing support to members of staff and developing creative solutions to ensure members of staff continued to work and people received consistent support. A member of staff told us, “I receive support from the registered manager and provider through supervision, guidance, and training to ensure I deliver safe, high-quality care.”
