Person-centred Care
The provider was exceptional at making sure people were at the centre of their care and treatment choices and they decided, in partnership with people, how to respond to any relevant changes in people’s needs.
The provider had significantly invested in opportunities available to people within the service. They were fortunate to have superb large gardens and people were able to work with a gardener to maintain the grounds and grow vegetables and plants. A person told us, “We have been weeding this morning, cutting bushes and have dug up the pumpkins, 13 of them and they are very big. We are now going to wash them.” A workshop had been erected where people could go to engage in arts and crafts. A person proudly showed us their beautiful works of art. Many exceptional works of art by individuals were on display throughout the service.
People were encouraged and supported to engage in cooking and kitchen safety. A cook was employed by the provider, who developed in house training programmes for people who wished to learn, including basic food hygiene, and safety in the kitchen. People received a certificate when they achieved an accepted level. People could help with meal preparation and cooking if they chose to. We saw people helping in the kitchen during our visit. People were very proud of their involvement, and many people were keen to tell us about this during our visit. A relative said, “(The cook) is fantastic, there are lots of opportunities in the kitchen.”
People’s care records were written in a way that put people at the centre of their care. Plans were individual and full of detail about people, their wishes and what was important to them. They fully reflected the people we met and what they told us, or we observed.
