Our view of the service

HMP Thameside is a reception and resettlement category B establishment. Practice Plus Group (PPG) is the healthcare provider at HMP Thameside.

In February 2025 we jointly inspected HMP Thameside with His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons. During that inspection we found the provider was in breach of three regulations: Regulation 12: Safe care and treatment, Regulation 16 Responding to and acting on complaints and Regulation 17 Good governance.

On 10 June and 11 June 2025, we completed a focused inspection of HMP Thameside to assess progress against the concerns previously identified.

During this inspection we looked at 8 quality statements. We found the provider had made sufficient progress and was no longer in breach of regulations. However, improvements must now be fully embedded to ensure long term change.

We found incidents were reported and learnings from incidents were shared. The service worked well with people and health system partners to establish and maintain safe systems of care. The service worked well with people to understand and manage risks. Staff received adequate supervision. Medicines were well managed. Access to healthcare services was good and systems were adequate to ensure staff maintained detailed clinical records for each person. Improvements had been made to the quality of care records. Complaints were managed well. Governance arrangements were well developed and embedded.

We do not currently rate services provided in prisons. We highlight good practice and issues service providers need to improve and take regulatory action as necessary.

People's experience of this service

Most of the people we spoke with during the inspection told us they had seen improvements to healthcare services in recent months however, some still held the view it took too long to access services. Most people told us healthcare staff were friendly and helpful when they were able to see them.
