During an inspection looking at part of the service

We found the provider had put systems in place to ensure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. Staff had received appropriate training to meet the complex needs of the people who used the service. Care records demonstrated that people had been supported by staff to partake in their usual programme of activities. We observed staff responding quickly to requests for support from people who used the service.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we used a number of different methods to find out what it was like for the people living at 10 Glenside. We spoke to three people about the home this included the coordinator and two support staff. We also spoke to one of the relatives of the people who lived at 10 Glenside by telephone.

They told us 'we've no concerns, quite happy with the way he is looked after. All the staff are so nice you can't fault any of them, they're all lovely'.

There were three people living at the home, two of them had lived there for over twenty years. They all had complex needs and were unable to contribute to our report. We observed interaction between them and staff on duty and it appeared that people living there were happy and content. It was clear that their needs were well known to staff. We found people were given the support they needed.

We asked staff what it was like working at 10 Glenside and they told us:

'I like this job the shifts maybe too long but I like the job'

'I've got experience in care'I like helping people 'it's a nice place to work'.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people living at 10 Glenside. This was because all of the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We observed during our inspection that the people living at 10 Glenside appeared happy and content living there. We found people were treated respectfully and given support to have their say in how they wanted to be helped and were supported to do the things they wanted to do.

The people living at 10 Glenside had limited verbal communication but could communicate in a number of other ways. They were supported by their families and people who knew how to communicate with them when decisions needed to be made about their care and welfare. They were represented in their best interests when it was appropriate to do so.

The people who lived at 10 Glenside were cared for by staff who were appropriately recruited, trained and experienced at supporting them.

During a routine inspection

Due to the different ways that the people living at 10 Glenside communicate we were not able to directly ask them their views about the support they received.

However, during our visit we met with all of the people living there. We spent time observing the support they receive from staff with their everyday lives and how they chose to spend their time at home. We have taken this information into account in writing this report.
