During an assessment under our new approach

Assessment date:9 April 2026 to 21 April 2026. We visited the service on9 and 10 April 2026.

Sunningdale Court isa care home providing accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care for a maximum of 20 adults who may have a learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder and younger adults. At the time of the assessment there were 20 people receiving care and support.

We carried out a comprehensive assessment due to the time since we last inspected the service. At the previous inspection, the provider was rated Good. However, during this assessment the overall rating changed to Requires Improvement, and the service was found to be in breach of legal requirements relating to the governance of the service, providing person-centered care, safe staffing and ensuring people had safe care and treatment.

We assessed the service against the principles of Right support, right care, right culture. This framework helps us determine whether people with a learning disability and autistic people are supported in a way that maximises choice, control, dignity, independence and access to their local community. The provider was not able to demonstrate how they were meeting these principles in practice.

Risks associated with people’s health needs had not always been considered, identified or mitigated to reduce potential risks. People’s daily care records did not have sufficient information documented and did not highlight people’s wellbeing.

Staff did not always receive the required training to support people’s diverse needs. Furthermore, it was identified from relatives, staff and professionals that there was not enough staff to ensure people engaged in meaningful conversation and activities.

Medicine management was not adequate. There was a range of concerns related to as and when needed medication (PRN) protocols, medications not administered as prescribed and inconsistent use of thickener for people.

People did not have goals or longer term aspirations in place other than meeting their basic care needs. There service did not adhere to the accessible information standard and provide information to people they can access and understand.

There was a lack of effective oversight and governance systems, because of this, concerns had not been identified by the service, which we found at this assessment.
