Updated 11 February 2026

Wheldale Heights is a care home providing accommodation, nursing and personal care for up to 24 people, living with complex mental and physical health needs arising from neurological conditions such as acquired brain injury, dementia, and Huntington's disease. There were 17 people living at the service on the first day of the assessment, and 18 people living at the service on the second day of the assessment.

The assessment was carried out in line with CQC’s assessment priorities. This was the first assessment of the service which registered in March 2023. The assessment commenced on 10 March 2026 and was completed on 16 March 2026. Site visits took place on both dates.

The service was led by a skilled and knowledgeable registered manager who championed an inclusive culture where people, relatives and staff felt valued. The culture was positive, open, and driven by a commitment to quality care delivery, learning and improvement. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs. They participated in training and their wellbeing was supported.

People’s complex health conditions were safely supported and monitored by a skilled staff team, who provided person-centred care. Care records were accurate, up to date and reflective of people’s needs. People’s medicines were managed safely.

The environment was clean and in a good state of repair. People’s bedrooms were personalised and decorated nicely.

The registered manager and staff worked together as a team to meet people’s needs and provide high quality care.

People's experience of the service

Updated 11 February 2026

People and relatives spoke positively about their experience of the service. They told us it was well run and organised. Feedback included, “It is amazing,” and “It is well run and organised. There are always enough staff. I would recommend it here.”

Staff supported people in a kind, caring, respectful and dignified way. They knew people well and considered their needs and preferences, providing support in line with this. Staff consistently sought people’s consent before providing care. Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) were appropriately monitored and managed to protect people’s legal rights.

People had a choice regarding what they wanted to do and when and where they spent their time. They participated in meaningful activities that reflected their interests. People had enough to eat and drink.

People were safe and protected from the risk of abuse. One relative told us, “[Name] is safe and well cared for. I can see how [staff] are with [Name] and [Name] has built up a rapport with them.”

Systems and processes were in place to ensure people and relatives were involved in care and had opportunities to provide feedback. Where feedback was given, this was listened to and actions implemented to improve people’s experiences.
