During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people living at Lower Meadow and three visitors. We saw that people looked well cared for and people told us they were happy with the care and support they were receiving. Comments included: 'Very good, very good, they take care of us.' 'This is a lovely home and residents are nice.' 'Oh yes I am happy here'. 'Visitors told us: 'As much as they can help X they do, they are very kind.' 'They tell you straight away if there is a problem.'

We observed that staff were friendly and respectful towards people. People we spoke with were positive about the care staff although they felt sometimes the staff seemed pressured. They told us: 'Very good, alright. They always come when I ring the bell, you might have to wait if they are busy.' 'Very good, very good'Sometimes I have to wait, it depends what is going on. I have nothing to grumble about.' During the day we observed that staff were busy carrying out their duties but when they were assisting people, they did not rush them. We saw that the home was running with some vacancies which they were hoping to fill soon.

People told us they could choose how to spend their day and we saw some people participating in social activities being provided in the day room. Some people told us they enjoyed the social activities and others told us they preferred to stay in their room. Comments included: 'Mostly we go to day care and play dominoes and bingo. We have a singer 'Wild Bill' and a lady singing it's not too bad.' 'I don't like them, I like to please myself.'

People told us that they enjoyed the meals being provided and we saw that there were sufficient choices were being made available. People told us: 'Very good'. 'The food is lovely.' Meal satisfaction surveys carried out by the home also contained positive comments including: 'Very nice, no complaints.' 'It was ok, quite nice.' 'Lovely omelette.'

We saw that people had an opportunity to voice their opinions about the care and services being provided within annual satisfaction surveys and bi-monthly 'resident' meetings. Areas for action were being identified by the manager as appropriate.
