Bracknell Care Home is a care home with nursing for up to 30 older people and people with physical disabilities. There were 26 people living at Bracknell Care Home during the inspection.

People received safe care from a consistent and dedicated staff team. Staff knew people well and were aware of risks to their safety and well-being. Accidents and incidents, safeguarding concerns and complaints were fully investigated and lessons learnt were shared across the service. Staff understood their responsibilities in keeping people safe from harm and abuse. Medicines were stored, managed and administered in line with people’s prescriptions. Staff received training in all aspects of their roles to ensure best practice was followed.

People were involved in the assessment process prior to moving into the home and felt they were consulted about their care and choices available to them. Good relationships had been developed with healthcare professionals who felt staff were skilled at identifying concerns, referred appropriately when additional support was required, and ensured any guidance provided was followed.

People, staff and professionals told us the registered manager was an exceptional leader who created a homely, family orientated environment where everyone was listened to. The staff team were supported to develop in their roles and received regular supervision. Staff told us they felt valued and appreciated by the management team and provider.

There was a strong ethos of providing highly personised care which centred around kindness and a respect for people’s diverse needs. The home engaged with the local community, encouraging different groups to visit the home and ensuring people were able to go out local shops and cafés when they wished to do so.

People's experience of the service

People told us they were happy and felt safe living at Bracknell Care Home. They felt they were involved in making decisions regarding their care and support and choices were consistently provided in their day-to-day care. Staff were highly attentive to people, ensuring they were comfortable and had everything they needed. Staff understood people’s individual needs and ensured their dignity and privacy was respected.

People benefitted from weekly visits from the GP and were supported to attend hospitals visits where required. Health outcomes and preferences were discussed with people and where requests for additional support to help maintain independence were required this was organised by the registered manager.

People were able to make choices about how they spent their time. There was a variety of activities available which were personalised to individuals. Where people preferred to spend time in their room, staff spent time with them and catered to their interests to minimise the risk of them feeling isolated. Visitors were welcome at any time and people’s religious and cultural needs were supported.

People spoke highly of the food and told us there were extensive options available to them. Any specific requests were catered for, and the catering team were knowledgeable about people’s dietary needs.

Regular residents’ meetings were held to ensure people could influence the way the service was run, and changes were made which reflected requests made. A resident spokesperson had been appointed to ensure everyone’s views were represented.
