All Inspections

2 September 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with two people who used the service. One of them told us they liked living there and that they got on well with the staff. They said 'the staff are amazing, they are like a second family to me.' Another told us it was "Ok" and they "got on quite well with most of the staff." As a part of the inspection we contacted some family members of people at the service. They told us that they were very happy with the care provided. One person said 'I could not wish for a better place.' Another said they were 'very impressed' with the care offered.

We saw that staff checked for people's consent to care that was provided. Where people lacked capacity to make a particular decision their family were included where possible and appropriate guidance followed.

We found that people received effective and safe care and support from staff that were familiar with people's individual needs and preferences. People were provided with a choice of suitable food and drinks. Health plans were in place, and where required, dietary advice had been taken to help maintain adequate nutrition and hydration levels. The service worked closely and effectively with other agencies and professionals.

The service was adequately maintained. We saw evidence that systems were in place to identify any maintenance requirements and that minor actions required by the Fire Safety office following their visit in April 2013 had been completed.

There were sufficient staff to meet the needs of people at the service. Staff said they were able to ensure people's needs were met and complete their other duties at the service. We saw that there were adequate procedures to deal with any complaints and people who used the service were aware of how to make a complaint. Each person had a guide to making a complaint in their bedrooms.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to two people who use the service. One person told us they had a care plan and had regular meetings with their key worker, 'I can chat with my key worker any time and we can change things in my care plan if we need to'. They told us 'the staff are wonderful here, like a second family, I don't know what I would do without them', 'I regularly attended residents meetings, we don't always get things done right away, but we get things done in the end'. They told us they enjoyed reading and regularly visited a local library and were trying to gain employment in a local charity shop. They told us 'the staff team are helping me with this and also helping me to find a college course'.

The other person who uses the service told us 'its okay here, it's homely and comfortable and the staff are alright'. They told us they regularly attended residents meetings.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to two people who use the service. One person told us that they attended regular residents meetings. They could make decisions about some aspects of service delivery for example meal planning and activities. They had been actively involved in developing their care plans. They met regularly with their key workers to discuss things they wanted to do. The food provided at the home was good, although sometimes they did not like what was provided. They told us they could talk to staff about this and they would be provided with something different. They told us they knew how to make a complaint if they needed to and the home would do something about their complaint.

The other person told us things had got better over the last two years since the new staff came, they liked having the same familiar staff supporting them. Both told us staff treated them with dignity and respect.
