During a routine inspection

On the day of our visit to Greenway House Residential Home we spoke with five of the people who lived there, a visiting relative, two home managers, the deputy manager and the care staff on duty. The visit was unannounced so that no one living or working in the home knew we were coming.

We received positive comments about the staff team from people that lived at the home and a visiting relative. The relative told us, 'I cannot fault the staff they are all friendly and helpful'. One person that lived in the home told us, 'The staff are very kind, they always come when I need them".

People told us that they felt safe in the home and were able to report any concerns they had. Two people told us, 'They (staff) always take the time to listen to us' and 'If there is a problem they (staff) will always do something about it'. People told us that they were asked for their views on the service the home provided.

Care records we examined showed that people's needs had been assessed before they moved into the home. We saw that care plans (called action plans by the service) had been developed to describe how people liked and needed to be supported.

We looked around the home and saw that people's bedrooms were homely and comfortable. People had been supported to personalise their bedrooms. People we spoke with told us that they were happy with their bedrooms. One person commented, 'It's not your own house but it is lovely and comfortable'.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this review, as our records showed that there had been no recent inspection of this service. Therefore, we visited Greenway House Residential Home in order to up to date the information we held and to establish that people's needs were being safely met.

There where 12 people living at Greenway House when we visited on 6th December 2011. The visit was unannounced which means the provider and the staff did not know we were coming.

The home felt warm and very welcoming and communal areas were decorated ready for Christmas. When we arrived five of the people living at the home, together with some of the staff, were preparing to go to a local hotel for a Christmas lunch.

We talked to people living at the home, family and friends visiting and staff members. People living at the home told us 'I am quite happy here, the staff are very good.' 'I went to see other homes and the minute I came here I knew this was the one.' Staff told us 'It is great to work here, I love it.' 'There is a nice blend of staff here; we all get on really well'.

We saw people were given tea and coffee throughout the day and there was a kitchenette area where people living at the home and their visitors could make themselves a drink. We saw this area being used by a person living at the home making drinks for themselves.
