All Inspections

27 June 2013

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. The inspection was unannounced which meant the provider and the staff did not know we were coming.

At our last inspection on 29 November 2012 we made two compliance actions about the management of medication and staffing levels. This meant the provider had to make improvements and demonstrate they were fully protecting people who used their service in these areas. We found that suitable and sufficient improvements had been made in the areas where we had identified concerns. We saw the provider had put right what was required. This meant there were sufficient staff to meet people's needs and medication was managed in a suitable and safe way.

We spoke with eight people using the service, four staff, two visitors and the registered provider. People told us that they were happy with the care and support in the home. We saw that staff provided sensitive support and people were treated respectfully. One person said, 'They are good here, and helpful.' A relative told us, 'My relative has settled really well. They are friendly but professional.'

People lived in a safe home where the d'cor and maintenance were appropriate. We found the home was safe and overall suitably maintained.

Records were stored safely and correctly and systems were as required. This ensured people's confidential information was stored appropriately.

29 November 2012

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. The inspection was unannounced which meant the provider and the staff did not know we were coming.

Twenty people were in residence and we spoke with seven people living in the home, five visitors, three staff, the registered manager and provider.

We saw people's privacy and dignity were respected because the staff knocked on people's doors and waited for an answer before entering. People told us they could spend time in any area of the home or alone in their bedroom when they wished to.

We were able to see that people received care and support that met their individual needs. We saw people's needs had been assessed by a range of health professionals. This meant that people's health care needs were monitored and met.

We looked at the way medication was managed and saw that improvements were needed to ensure medication systems and practices were safe and suitable.

We looked at the recruitment procedures for staff and found that suitable systems were in place to protect people.

We looked at the number of staff on duty in relation to the needs of the people who lived their and found more care staff were required at certain times of the day to provide the necessary support to people living in the home.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. We spoke with six people using the service a visiting care professional, the staff on duty and visitors.

We saw that the staff were kind and respectful. They gave support in ways that promoted people's dignity and privacy. Staff listened to people and spent time with them, talking and carrying out activities, as well as providing care.

People spoken with told us they felt staff treated them well. They also commented that they received support from regular staff, which promoted consistency.

People told us the staff were kind and caring, one person said; 'The staff are jolly, they are never rude or unkind. I feel safe here because they look after me well.'

Relatives continued to play an active role and support people and provide care. Family and friends could attend social events and were involved in supporting people using the service where appropriate. One visitor told us; 'The staff are lovely, very helpful, they definitely understand my relatives needs and are very good at communicating with the family.'

A visiting professional to the home told us, 'The staff are friendly and helpful, they have a nice attitude. They always put in place what we ask for and refer appropriately. We can rely on them.'
