Kindness, compassion and dignity

Staff treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. People and their relatives said staff were caring and kind. One person told us, “The staff will do anything for you. If they are busy they stop what they're doing, help then get back on with whatever they were doing.” A relative we spoke with said, “It is wonderful here, [named person] is so well cared for.” Staff also treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. Staff knew and treated people as individuals. Throughout our visit we saw people and staff having meaningful conversations about things that were important to people. One person told us, “The staff here are lovely, they will always help you.” An external professional we spoke with said, “I have been surprisedhow the manager has excellent knowledge of each resident I have reviewed. This includes, diagnosis, the person’s social history and professional involvement, without accessing the care plan. I feel this is really person-centred and highlights how much she knows and cares about her residents.”

Independence, choice and control

Staff promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were encouraged to do as much as possible for themselves to maintain their independence. One person told us, “The staff always ask me to walk myself, to encourage me to keep moving.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. We saw staff providing kind and caring support throughout our visit. A relative told us, “Couldn't ask for anywhere better, it is really lovely.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider and registered manager cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff spoke positively about working at the service. Comments included, “There has been a few times I have needed help from the manager and she has helped me” and, “The home runs very smoothly. We are a good team and work well together.”
